Katakana Chart with Romaji

Katakana writes loanwords (コーヒー = coffee), foreign names and emphasis. It has exactly the same sounds as hiragana with different shapes — learn it second. Every cell shows the kana and how to type it. When you can read the main table without the romaji, test yourself with the kana quiz.

Reading tips

Small っ doubles the next consonant (きって kitte, "stamp"). In katakana, a long dash ー stretches the vowel (コーヒー kōhī). Particles は, へ and を are read wa, e and o. Ready? Switch to the hiragana chart or take the quiz.
